  8. The time was 8.59 in the morning, and she was late for work. A quick 
  9. breakfast, an even quicker shower and then she had to rush. But just as 
  10. she was about to touch the handle and leave her little apartment, someone
  11. rang on her door bell. She sighed and opened the door.
  12.    "Miss Adams!" the little man saluted her. He wore a grey suit and in his 
  13. hand he had a little briefcase. Behind him stood another man, wearing the 
  14. same type of clothes and smiling like a lunatic.
  15.    "Yes, how pleased to meet you, who-ever-you-are," said (Miss) Jessica
  16. Adams, "but I'm in a quite of a hurry right now..."
  17.    "Ah, but I have wonderful news for you!" said the little man.
  18.    "Wonderful news?"
  19.    The little man balanced his suitcase on the top of his right leg, opened
  20. it, and brought up a paper. He looked up, while fumbling with a pen, and 
  21. said: "Oh, you really gonna like this, really, really gonna..."
  22.    "I sure hope so. I'm really, really late for work..."
  23.    "Work?" the little man asked, looking quite surprised.
  24.    "Yes. Work."
  25.    "How strange. Thought people of your kind didn't go to work. Anyway..."
  26.    He began to read from the paper, with a very formal voice: "The State has 
  27. today (there's a date here too, Miss Adams, but I guess you know which date 
  28. it's today) granted Miss Jessica Adams the permission to fulfil that desire 
  29. she expressed in her application form (A435). If she is not able to fulfil 
  30. that desire she expressed in her application form (A435), The State will 
  31. arrange all the help needed for fulfilling that desire she expressed in her 
  32. application form (A435)."
  33.    The little man looked at her, his eyes wide open and a huge smile on his
  34. face. Jessica looked at the little man, completely confused.
  35.    "Application form?" she asked.
  36.    "A435."
  37.    "Granted?"
  38.    "Yes, yes!"
  39.    "Desire?"
  40.    "Suicide."
  41.    "What!?" she screamed. The little man almost fell into the arms of the
  42. man behind him. She was about to shut the door and forget about the 
  43. encounter with the little man, but she knew that she had to find out what
  44. was going on.
  45.    "Listen," she said after she had calmed down, "I'm not in the mood for
  46. a suicide. And I've never been."
  47.    "Oh, yes you have. Five years ago, you sent this application form to..."
  48.    "Five years ago!? Five years!"
  49.    "The State works slowly, but effectively."
  50.    She had a flashback. Sitting in a empty bar, feeling low since she had
  51. been unfaithful to her husband, drinking bad whiskey, crying, feeling sad 
  52. because he had left her, signing some paper, giving it to some man that 
  53. resembled her of a rock-n-roll priest, going home, waking up, feeling better 
  54. (if one does not count the hangover), forgetting it all; end of flashback.
  55.    "Alrighty then, I sent you, uh, The State, whoever, a paper five years
  56. ago, but I've changed my mind. I wanna live, okay?"
  57.    The little man raised his hand.
  58.    "Perhaps this will change your mind!" he said and snapped his fingers.
  59. The other man, still smiling, stepped forward and opened up a briefcase in 
  60. front of her face. 
  61.    "A fine set of tools, don't you say?" said the little man.
  62.    She looked into the briefcase. It contained one pistol, one revolver, a 
  63. long rope, one injection needle, a hammer and a nail, one dynamite stick 
  64. (and a match box), pills, some strange white powder, car keys, subway 
  65. tickets, a long hose and a box with two cables coming out of it ("Harry's
  66. Portable Electrocution Chair").
  67.    "Thanks, but no thanks."
  68.    "But! I can assure you, these are the best available..."
  69.    She shut the door. Looking through the little peep hole, she saw the man 
  70. walk away with his companion and the briefcases.
  71.    "Thank God..." she mumbled and took a deep breath. She was about to leave
  72. the apartment for work, when the door bell rang again. Violently, she opened 
  73. the door.
  74.    "Didn't I just say that I didn't want..."
  75.    Outside the door stood two other men. They also wore grey suits, big
  76. smiles and suitcases.
  77.    "Miss Adams!" one of them saluted her.
  78.    "What it is now?"
  79.    The man who had saluted her snapped his fingers. The other man opened
  80. up his suitcase. It contained one pistol, one revolver, etcetera. 
  81.    "Your ex-husband (Pete Adams) has been granted permission to fulfil his 
  82. desire, that he expressed in his application form, five years ago. However, 
  83. since he's unavailable today, he will not be able to fulfil his desire by 
  84. himself. So The State will do it for him."
  85.    "Let me guess: he has been granted the permission to commit suicide? By 
  86. the way, what has that got to do with me?"
  87.    The man laughed and shook his head.
  88.    "No, no, Miss Adams. Not suicide. Homicide."
